Biden happy with steady progress toward peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has received Michael Carpenter, senior director for Europe at the National Security Council of the Biden Administration. Carpenter handed over Biden’s letter to Aliyev.

“I am satisfied with the steady progress toward the peace treaty between your country and Armenia, which will serve to normalize relations between the two countries,” reads the letter.

It was noted that a stable and dignified peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan will finally put an end to the age-old conflict. “A peace treaty, along with ensuring Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, will transform the entire region, ensuring increased trade, investment and connections between Europe and Central Asia,” reads the letter.

“Now that the world’s attention is focused on Baku for COP29, you have a unique opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to peace. As you know, finalizing the remaining points of the peace treaty will require a creative approach and compromise on all sides. But I am sure you will not miss this opportunity, and I urge you to complete the agreement,” Biden wrote.

The head of the White House noted that his administration is “ready to take bold initiatives that will help pave the way to peace.” “I have asked Michael Carpenter, my senior director for Europe, to inform the president of Azerbaijan about some steps that the United States is ready to take, as well as to learn about your point of view regarding the discussions with Armenia,” reads the letter.
