uropean Parliament adopts resolution calling for sanctions against Azerbaijan
The European Parliament has adopted a resolution calling on
the EU to impose sanctions against Azerbaijan in connection with the recent
Azerbaijani offensive against Artsakh. The members of the European Parliament
(MEP) also call on the EU to reduce its dependency on Azerbaijani gas imports.
The resolution, however, has no binding force.
Four hundred and ninety-one MEPs voted in favor, nine
opposed, and 36 abstained.
“The European Parliament urges the High Representative and
the EEAS to suspend the negotiations for a renewed partnership agreement until
Azerbaijan has demonstrated its genuine readiness to respect the rights and
security concerns of the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh,” reads the
text of the resolution.
The MEPs underlined the need to reduce the EU’s dependency
on Azerbaijani gas imports and called for the suspension of all imports of oil
and gas from Azerbaijan to the EU if the relations between Armenia and
Azerbaijan deteriorate.
