BBC: Approximately 80,000 Russian soldiers have been killed since the start of the war in Ukraine, averaging 140 per day

According to open data, the BBC, in cooperation with Mediazona and volunteer groups, has identified the names of 78,329 Russian soldiers who died during the large-scale invasion of Ukraine. The rate of confirmed casualties is now at its highest throughout the entire war.

The figures for September, October, and November are one and a half times higher than those from the previous year and more than double compared to data from 2022.

In 2024, the average age of confirmed Russian deaths has been 38, whereas in the early months of the war, the average age of fatalities was 21.

Throughout September, there were reports of an average of 140 Russian soldiers dying each day. The figures for October 2024 were even higher, with an average of 152 confirmed deaths per day.

Some obituaries list the date of death as being in the first half of 2024 or even in the preceding years of the war. However, in the last two months, the rate of losses has exceeded the 2023 average daily figure by 1.6 times, during which about 90 deaths were confirmed daily.

At least 56% of all killed were individuals who were not affiliated with the Russian army at the outset of the war.
