Presidential elections in Abkhazia may be held on Feb. 15

Snap presidential elections in Abkhazia may take place on Feb. 15, according to the Central Election Commission of Abkhazia, as reported by RIA Novosti.

To remind, mass protests were held in Abkhazia on Nov. 15, triggered by an investment agreement signed with Russia, which has faced strong opposition from activists who believe it jeopardizes Abkhazia’s economic sovereignty.

In Sukhumi, protesters seized government buildings and demanded the resignation of President Aslan Bzhania. It was reported yesterday that negotiations had begun between representatives of the government and the opposition, during which the president agreed to resign.
