Houthis detain 7 UN staff members in Yemen

The Houthis have detained seven U.N. staff members, Deputy Spokesperson for the U.N. Secretary-General Farhan Haq said during a press briefing.

According to the Office of the U.N. Resident Coordinator in Yemen, the incident occurred on Jan. 23 in Sanaa.

“In response, we have suspended all movements in areas under the de facto authorities’ control. This measure will remain in place until further notice,” Haq stated.

He added that U.N. representatives are working to secure the release of those detained.

The detention of U.N. staff members comes just days after the release of the crew of the Galaxy Leader, an oil tanker seized by the Houthis in the Red Sea in November 2023.
