Slovak Foreign Ministry: The European Commission may discuss with Kyiv the transit of gas from Azerbaijan through Ukraine
The transit of gas from Azerbaijan through Ukrainian territory could become a topic of negotiations between Kyiv and the European Commission (EC), with the involvement of Bratislava and Budapest, Slovak Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Juraj Blanár said.
“We have initially discussed with the Ukrainian government the possibility of transporting non-Russian gas through Ukraine, and therefore we are considering the willingness of the Ukrainian side to discuss such transit as a return to our proposed solution, in which we consider, for example, transporting gas from Azerbaijan,” Reuters writes, citing Blanár.
Earlier, the news agency reported that the EC would continue negotiations regarding the supply of gas to Europe through Ukrainian territory and intends to include Hungary and Slovakia in that process.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that Volodymyr Zelenskyy is “doing a favor to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump” by halting the transit of Russian gas through Ukrainian territory and “offering all of Europe on a silver platter to Washington,” as the United States could supply the European market with more expensive liquefied natural gas.
The transit of Russian gas to Europe through Ukraine was completely halted on Jan. 1, as Kyiv refused to extend the agreement.
