Bloomberg: Google may work on technologies that could kill people

Google has updated its artificial intelligence (AI) usage principles by removing a clause that would prevent the use of AI in weaponry, Bloomberg reports.

According to the media company, these principles previously included a provision known as “AI applications,” under which, the company should not apply “technologies that cause or may cause general harm,” including weapons.

“We believe that democratic countries should lead the way in the development of artificial intelligence, guided by the fundamental values of freedom, equality, and respect for human rights. We think that companies, governments, and organizations that share these values should work together to create AI that protects people, fosters global growth, and supports national security,” reads the article.

According to Margaret Mitchell, who used to lead the Google AI ethics team, this move could enable Google to work on the development of technologies that could kill people.
