Rubio: The US does not intend to continue subsidizing NATO allies
The United States does not intend to continue subsidizing NATO allies, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated, TASS reports.
“The only threat to NATO is the fact that we have allies who lack sufficient military strength because they have not invested in it. There are wealthy countries, particularly in Western Europe, that have ample resources and should be spending them on national security, yet this is not happening. There are countries that spend 1.5% of their economy on it and we cannot continue to subsidize them. It is not fair, and it is not sustainable,” Rubio said.
At the same time, the U.S. secretary of state dismissed claims that the U.S. wants to leave Europe.
“We are telling them that they need to do more—after all, this is their continent,” Rubio said.
