People arrested as protests in Argentina’s capital turn into mass riots

Mass protests are taking place in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The protesters are retirees demanding improvements in living conditions. They have received support from football players.

Around 2,000 people have expressed their dissatisfaction over small pensions and poor conditions in central and surrounding streets. Clashes occurred during the protest between law enforcement officers and demonstrators.

Young people threw wood, bottles, and stones at the police. In response, the police used tear gas and water cannons. Protesters attempted to build barricades and set fire to police vehicles and trash bins. Amid the mass riots, 150 people have been arrested, the country’s national security minister says. He stated that 15 to 17 police officers were injured. “Many of the people who came to this protest—fans, leftists—arrived prepared to kill,” the minister stated.
