Nicolas Sarkozy: Ukraine should remain a neutral country

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy stated that Ukraine
should remain a neutral country and strive to become a bridge between Russia
and Europe.

“All-out efforts to achieve Ukraine’s membership in NATO is
a mistake,” Sarkozy said in an interview to El Mundo.

“Ukraine’s mission should be to remain a neutral country, of
course, being provided with reliable international security guarantees. And
Ukraine should strive to become a bridge between Russia and Europe” the former
French president said.

Sarkozy also noted that incumbent French President Emmanuel
Macron did well to try to maintain communication with Russian President
Vladimir Putin open. 

“Yes, he was right trying to hold a dialogue with Russian
President Putin, and I really regret that he did not keep up with that dialogue
and did not go further in this regard, as I did back in 2008,” Sarkozy said.
