Building a new hospital, turning Gyumri into a free trade zone: What does Vardan Ghukasyan promise?
Vardan Ghukasyan, the Armenian Communist Party’s (HKK) candidate for mayor of Gyumri, announced during today’s campaign event that the city needs a second hospital.
He proposed that the municipality establish its own hospital, with part of the profits contributing to the city budget. Additionally, he pledged free or affordable medical services for low-income residents. Ghukasyan also highlighted the lack of pedestrian crossings in Gyumri’s central square, suggesting that the issue be addressed through either municipal funding or private investments.
According to Ghukasyan, Gyumri should be transformed into a free economic zone to attract investments. He criticized the Armenian government’s tax policies, noting that earthquake-stricken Gyumri should not be subjected to the same taxes as other cities. He recalled that during Soviet times, Gyumri was an industrial hub, but its factories were dismantled. Their restoration requires a strategic government approach, according to the politician.
Ghukasyan also addressed regional politics, alleging that many members of Armenia’s current leadership have been trained in Turkey, which he views as a security threat. He emphasized the importance of the Armenian Apostolic Church but argued that spiritual leaders should be chosen by the people. Additionally, he underscored Russia’s role in Armenia’s history, noting that the country had lived in peace with Russia for 75 years.
