The United States has repeatedly called for the opening of
the Lachin corridor. But, that was followed by additional Azeri violations of
ceasefire terms and the taking of three Armenian lives. Adjunct Professor at
Georgetown University David L. Phillips said this at the hearing on the
situation in Nagorno-Karabakh held by the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission.
The professor noted that the language used by Azerbaijani
President Ilham Aliyev and his officials leaves no question about their
genocidal intentions.
“Imposing sanctions on the officials and the corrupt
leadership of Azerbaijan would be more effective. A research and documentation
project on the Azerbaijani atrocities in Artsakh is being undertaken. The
project provides information on Azerbaijan’s ethnic cleansing policies,”
Phillips noted.
