Israel going to ‘sacrifice hostages held in Gaza’, says Hamas
Hamas has announced that the expansion of Israel’s military operation in Gaza signifies a decision by the Jewish state’s authorities to sacrifice the lives of hostages, the movement said in a Telegram post.
Hamas called on the U.N. and the international community to “take urgent measures to put an end to the actions of Israeli authorities and hold them accountable” for what is happening in the enclave.
The Israeli outlet Ynet reported earlier that Israel’s military-political cabinet had approved a plan to expand military operations in Gaza, which includes the possibility of occupying the Palestinian enclave. Israeli government spokesperson David Mencer told reporters that the plan to expand the Gaza operation involves increasing territory and maintaining control over seized areas, but does not include occupying the enclave. According to Israel’s public broadcaster Kan, the expanded military operation is code-named “Gideon’s Wheels.” Its objectives are “defeating Hamas, restoring peace in Gaza,” and “releasing all hostages.” According to the latest data provided by the Israeli side, there are currently 24 hostages and bodies of 35 killed captives held in Gaza.
