Court restricts Trump’s authority to impose tariffs
On May 28, a U.S. federal court ruled to prohibit President Donald Trump from imposing tariffs, citing abuse of authority, Reuters reports.
“The president abused his authority by imposing comprehensive tariffs on goods imported from countries that sell more to the U.S. than they buy from it,” reads the court’s ruling.
It is noted that when imposing tariffs, the U.S. president was guided by the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The court found that Trump had exceeded the powers granted to the president under IEEPA.
According to the website, the Trump administration immediately filed a notice of appeal.
