Elon Musk’s $1 trillion cost-cutting plan fails, says Politico

Musk has failed to achieve his goal of reducing government spending by $1 trillion during his tenure in the U.S. government, Politico writes.

It is believed that he has not come close to the desired savings and has also failed to significantly impact the U.S. debt crisis. The publication suggests that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) will be remembered more as a chaotic missed opportunity than as a transformation of the federal government.

DOGE has cut or closed 11 federal agencies, and about 250,000 federal employees have left their jobs, saving taxpayers approximately $160 billion. At the same time, overall government expenditures have increased.

Yesterday, Musk posted on X that his time as a government special servant is coming to an end. At the same time, he expressed confidence that DOGE’s role in the U.S. government will only grow over time.

In April, the entrepreneur announced he would reduce his involvement with DOGE starting in May. This came after Tesla reported that its net profit in the first quarter of 2025 had decreased by 71% compared to the previous year. Analysts attribute the revenue decline, among other reasons, to the entrepreneur’s political activities—including his role as a curator of DOGE.
