U.S. Court of Appeals ruling keeps Trump-imposed tariffs in effect

The U.S. Court of Appeals has allowed President Donald Trump to continue collecting tariffs, thereby suspending the injunction issued by the federal court overseeing international trade matters, the Associated Press writes.

The agency reports that on May 29, the federal appellate court announced that the government could proceed with collecting tariffs in accordance with the emergency powers act, while the Trump administration appeals the trade court’s decision.

Earlier, the U.S. federal court overseeing international trade had declared Trump’s tariffs on various countries illegal. The three-judge panel had upheld several lawsuits, asserting that Trump improperly applied the emergency powers act to justify the tariffs on imports.

On May 29, the U.S. Department of Justice appealed to the Court of Appeals, seeking to halt the ruling while the Trump administration prepares an official challenge.
