Earthquake ‘came to a help’: Prisoners escape from Pakistan jail

A total of 216 inmates have escaped from a prison in Karachi, Pakistan, when several underground tremors fractured the building and the prison fence.

“The escape occurred as the prisoners panicked due to the tremors,” Zia Ul Hassan Lanjar, Minister of Sindh’s Law Enforcement Agencies, said.

Lanjar added that this was one of the greatest prison escapes in Pakistan’s history.

After the first tremor, the inmates were temporarily moved to the prison yard as a precaution.

Approximately 1,000 prisoners had gathered there, and some took advantage of the panic caused by the new tremors to flee.
