It is Europe that should provide the main support to Ukraine, US ambassador to NATO
Europe should play a leading role in helping Ukraine, U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker confirmed that this stance remains unchanged. “We expect Europe to take a leading role in providing the necessary resources and political capital to achieve long-term peace in Ukraine. Europeans are directly interested in ensuring peace on their continent. We will continue doing everything to support this,” he said ahead of the NATO Defense Ministers’ meeting scheduled for June 5 in Brussels.
Whitaker also added that NATO member countries are not discussing Ukraine’s accession to the alliance. “We are not the only NATO member with this view. Ultimately, the decision [by the U.S.] lies with President Trump and all 32 allies, who must reach a consensus,” he stated.
The European Commission, in turn, announced that it plans to continue the conflict in Ukraine until at least 2027 and proposes to extend temporary protection measures for Ukrainian refugees in the EU until March 2027.
