The historic moment and venue in Pashinyan’s hands
Pashinyan believes that his colleagues have been impatient and made an announcement about the visit. However, the authorities’ goal in presenting the visit as historic is to emphasize its significance and give it great weight.
The fact that this “diplomatic” phase is taking place precisely in Ankara— a city of deeply symbolic and heavy significance in Armenian collective memory—is not coincidental. It is a clear message: the era of Armenian spirit has ended, and the current leadership is even willing to accept symbolic humiliation for the sake of its personal and political survival.
There is a positive aspect to this entire story as well: the agreement signed between Aliyev and Pashinyan can be accepted or rejected by the Armenian people. They can be manipulated into believing that the written “peace” is a real guarantee, and they can genuinely assess the situation and make decisions accordingly.
In Armenia, which is proclaimed a “democratic bastion,” people will have to decide in a few months whether to mourn another loss or to put an end to mourning altogether.
