Karen Bekaryan: The statement on the one-way opening of the Lachin corridor is in keeping with Baku’s attempts to depopulate Artsakh
I think no one doubts that this statement is in keeping with
Azerbaijan’s approaches and that this piece of information can really be meant
to carry out Azerbaijan’s policy. Political scientist Karen Bekaryan said this
to ABC Media referring to the statement made by Nikol Pashinyan today.
According to Pashinyan, plans are afoot to open the Lachin
corridor in one direction. This implies allowing movement from, but refusing
entry into Nagorno-Karabakh.
The expert, however, does not want to refer to the
authenticity of this information. He does not rule out the possibility that
this statement may be a means to a political end.
“With this regard, Azerbaijan’s end in view is the
depopulation of Artsakh. Thus, the motives of this statement can be fully
explained from this point of view,” Bekaryan said.
According to him, how we got to this point and how
Azerbaijan’s impunity grew due to the radical approaches adopted all this time
is another question.
“We have been talking about this for years. However,
the brakes were never put on in this process. If people think that they can
achieve something by constantly ceding something, they are mistaken,”
Bekaryan said.
According to the expert, the situation is rather dangerous with
regard to the humanitarian crisis in Artsakh as things are hitting crisis
point.
“Now, we are in a grave situation. We will face a
threat even to our existence if the situation is not dealt with,” Karen
Bekaryan said.
