Largest oil and gas reservoir discovered in Poland

The Central European Petroleum (CEP) announced the discovery of Poland’s largest oil and gas field in the Baltic Sea, on the island of Wolin. Its reserves could reach up to 22 million tons of oil and 5 billion cubic meters of gas.

“The Wolin East deposit is estimated to contain 22 million tons of extractable hydrocarbons—oil and condensate—and 5 billion cubic meters of commercially viable gas,” said a CEP press release.

“According to the above estimate, the Wolin East oil and gas field is the largest conventional hydrocarbon deposit discovered in Poland to date and one of the largest conventional oil discoveries in Europe over the past decade,” the company noted. The WE1 drilling well was drilled using a drilling rig located 9.5 meters below sea level and reached a depth of 2,715 meters vertically.

“This is a historic milestone for both the Central European Petroleum and Poland’s energy sector, and we see this discovery as a foundation for the long-term and responsible development of Poland’s offshore resources. Wolin East is not only a promising field but also a joint opportunity to explore the entire geological and energy potential of the Baltic Sea,” said Rolf G. Skaare, CEO of CEP.

The company is currently looking for partners to start production. According to the CEO, CEP is eager to collaborate with both Polish and international companies.
