Indian prime minister sets new record, surpassing Gandhi

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has surpassed the 4,078-day mark in office, breaking the record previously held by Indira Gandhi (1917–1984), who served as the country’s Prime Minister for 4,077 consecutive days from Jan 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977, reports NDTV.

With this achievement, Modi has become the second-longest serving Prime Minister in the history of independent India, only behind the country’s first leader, Jawaharlal Nehru. He is also the first and only Prime Minister born after India gained independence. Additionally, Modi is the only Prime Minister besides Nehru to have won three consecutive elections as the leader of a political party, and he is the first sitting government head since 1971 to return to power with an outright majority.
