Baku discussing who should be Azerbaijan’s ambassador to Armenia

Discussions are already underway in Baku on who should become Azerbaijan’s ambassador to Armenia after the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, Sputnik Armenia reports.

Elmar Mammadyarov, who served as Azerbaijan’s foreign minister for 16 years, told a local media outlet that Azerbaijan’s ambassador to Armenia must definitely know the Armenian language.

According to him, it is not necessary for the ambassador to be a career diplomat; an outsider could be appointed, as long as the person understands and is familiar with the characteristics of the Armenian people.

When asked whether he himself would be ready to take the post of Azerbaijan’s ambassador to Armenia, Mammadyarov replied, “As deemed necessary.”

At the same time, Mammadyarov stressed that such an appointment would only be possible after the signing of a special document on the establishment of diplomatic relations.
