Both sides will have to make concessions to end the war in Ukraine, says Rubio
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that “both sides are going to have to make concessions” to end Russia’s war in Ukraine, CBS News writes.
According to him, the United States seeks to reach an agreement that will allow for an end to the war, the restoration of Ukraine, and the prevention of such developments from happening again.
Rubio, who attended the summit, was thin on details Sunday, saying that “there are things that were discussed as part of this meeting that are potentials for breakthroughs.” According to him, it is necessary to create sufficient grounds to organize a direct meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy and reach a final peace agreement.
Rubio noted that neither side is ready to capitulate. “If one side gets everything they want, that’s called surrender,” he said. “And that’s not what we’re close to doing, because neither side here is on the verge of surrender, or anything close to it.”
According to Rubio, important topics of discussion include Ukraine’s security guarantees, the issue of territorial borders, and the reconstruction of the country.
