India to reduce Russian oil purchases under US pressure

Major Indian refiners, including Reliance Industries, plan to cut imports of Russian crude to 1.4–1.6 million barrels per day starting in October, down from 1.8 million barrels per day in the first half of 2025, Bloomberg writes.

The reduction comes in response to a U.S. decision to double tariffs on goods imported from India. Washington argues that India’s purchases of Russian oil help Russia continue its war in Ukraine.

However, New Delhi does not intend to halt trade with Moscow entirely. If India and the United States can reach a new trade agreement, the volume of oil imports could be adjusted again.
