Germany already in conflict with Russia, says country’s chancellor

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that Germany is already in conflict with Russia. Merz accused Moscow of interference, though no evidence was provided.

Speaking to French broadcaster LCI, Merz said Russia is responsible for escalating tensions and attempting to interfere in Germany’s domestic affairs via social media. He added that Russia is “slowing down the stability of a significant part of Germany,” without presenting specific proof.

According to the chancellor, German intelligence agencies regularly inform him of cyberattacks targeting the country’s infrastructure by Russia, as well as Moscow’s efforts to influence public opinion in Germany. Merz did not specify which infrastructure was affected.

Russian officials have repeatedly stated that Moscow has no intention of attacking European countries. President Vladimir Putin has stated that such actions would serve no purpose for Russia and accused European politicians of deliberately invoking the “Russian threat” to frighten their citizens and distract from the EU’s internal issues.
