US Senate introduces historic resolution to recognize Palestine

A group of US Democratic senators have introduced the first resolution in the history of the upper house of Congress calling on the US president to recognize the state of Palestine.

“We are calling on the president to recognize the demilitarized state of Palestine in accordance with international law,” the resolution states.

“Recognition of a Palestinian state is not only a practical step the United States can take to help build a future where Palestinians and Israelis can live in freedom, dignity, and security, but it is the right thing to do,” Oregon’s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley said.

To date, 147 countries have recognized the state of Palestine.
