Trump and his actions through eyes of world leaders
Regardless of political perspective, Donald Trump’s presidency has had an impact not only on the United States but also on the world, The Washington Post writes.
This influence was evident during the United Nations General Assembly, where Trump addressed world leaders last Tuesday. Many of them mentioned Trump and his policies in their speeches and other events, either directly or indirectly.
Here are quotes from various world leaders at the UN last week regarding Trump and his administration, reflecting positive, negative, and neutral perspectives:
French President Emmanuel Macron spoke to Trump by phone after streets were blocked due to the U.S. presidential motorcade: “You know what? I’m waiting outside because everything is frozen for you… I would like a short discussion with you this weekend regarding the situation in Qatar and Gaza.”
Chinese Premier Li Qiang said: “One of the main reasons for the current global economic slowdown is the rise of unilateral and protectionist measures, such as tariff increases and the building of walls and barriers. We must cooperate more closely to identify and expand shared interests, promote inclusive and beneficial global economic globalization, and move forward together toward success.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his speech: “Yesterday we had a good meeting with President Trump, and I also spoke with many other strong leaders. Together, we can achieve a lot of change.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said: “In the approaches of the current U.S. administration, we see not only a willingness to contribute to realistic solutions to the Ukrainian crisis, but also a desire to develop pragmatic cooperation without taking ideological positions.”
Referring to Trump’s climate statements, India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said: “If climate actions themselves are called into question, then what hope is there for climate justice?”
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated: “In this [Armenia-Azerbaijan] peace process, the role of U.S. President Donald Trump has been decisive. His dedication, consistency, and principled approach made possible what once seemed impossible.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev also expressed gratitude to Trump for his role in the peace initiative and for “opening a new chapter in U.S.-Azerbaijan relations.”
