Protesters attack Ecuadorian president’s motorcade
Around 350 protesters attacked the motorcade of Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa and foreign diplomats.
“They oppose Ecuador’s progress and choose violence. Yesterday in Otavalo, my humanitarian convoy, which I was leading together with UN and EU representatives and the Italian ambassador, was attacked,” President Noboa wrote on his social media page.
Rocks and Molotov cocktails were thrown at the vehicles. According to media reports, the convoy was transporting humanitarian aid.
The unrest began after the government removed diesel fuel subsidies that had been in place since 1974. The decision triggered sharp price increases and protests, leading to a nationwide strike.
