Unidentified drones invade Belgian military base

Around 15 drones were detected by chance over a military base in Elsenborn during a routine test of surveillance equipment. The drones were detected by chance, Euronews writes.

The base, located within the German-speaking Community of Belgium, covers 28 square kilometres and is primarily used as an army training camp. Where the drones came from and who was controlling them is not yet clear, although some local outlets said they had reportedly flown over the border from neighbouring Germany.

Belgium’s defense ministry has reportedly launched an investigation into the incident.

The incident comes amid a surge in airspace violations in Europe. On Thursday night, Munich airport was temporarily closed due to several drones, resulting in the cancellation of 17 flights. Similar incidents have also been reported recently in Denmark, Norway and Poland, while airspace violations have also been reported in Estonia and Romania.

All this has sparked heated new discussions among European leaders about whether to create a “drone wall” to protect the continent’s eastern border. There is speculation that Russia is behind these incidents, but Moscow has called them “baseless accusations.”
