
Georgia charges 5 opposition members with calls for coup
Georgia’s Prosecutor’s Office has officially charged five opposition figures with inciting a coup and calling for the overthrow of the government on Oct. 4, the day of the country’s local self-government elections, RIA Novosti writes.
Prosecutor’s Office Spokesperson Davit Gumberidze said the charges include calls to violently overthrow Georgia’s constitutional order, as well as organizing, leading, and participating in group violence.
On Oct. 4, Georgia held municipal elections. After processing 100% of the ballots, the Central Election Commission announced that the ruling Georgian Dream party had won in all districts. Following the announcement, demonstrators who rejected the results gathered outside the presidential residence and the parliament building.
