Turkey seeks to buy fighter jets from Qatar
According to Middle East Eye, Turkey is in talks with Qatar to purchase Tranche 3A Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets, Ermenihaber reports.
Qatari sources say that Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler and Air Force Commander Ziya Cemal Kadıoğlu have already discussed the potential deal in Doha.
At the same time, it is noted that the purchase requires the approval of the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Spain, and France — all of which, according to the source, have a positive stance on the issue.
In July, Turkey had signed a preliminary agreement with London to acquire 40 new fighter jets, but later Ankara deemed the deal too expensive. The sides are now in a new phase of discussions, trying to finalize the terms of a possible agreement.
This, according to reports, is why Turkey is turning to Qatar for a faster solution, as reaching an agreement with London could take several years, according to some estimates.
