‘Witch’: Maduro slams Nobel laureate María Corina Machado
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has called opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado a “demon” and a “witch,” according to the Venezuelan newspaper El Universal.
“Ninety percent of the population rejects the demon-witch,” Maduro said, commenting on Machado’s recent calls for foreign intervention.
According to the paper, Maduro reaffirmed the Venezuelan people’s determination to defend their homeland from those who, in his words, oppose a just peace based on dignity and equality.
“We want peace, and we will have peace—but peace with freedom and sovereignty,” he concluded.
Last Friday, the Nobel Committee awarded the Peace Prize to Venezuela’s opposition leader María Corina Machado.
