Hungary must enforce arrest warrant if Putin enters country, says German government
The German government has said that Hungary is obligated to follow the International Criminal Court (ICC) rules if Russian President Vladimir Putin enters the country, amid discussions of a potential meeting between Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump, eurointegration.com.ua reports, citing a spokesperson for Germany’s foreign ministry.
Although the Hungarian government has announced plans to withdraw from the ICC, the move will not take effect until April of next year, the spokesperson noted. Thus, Hungary is still required to enforce Putin’s arrest warrant should he enter the country.
Earlier reports said that the presidents of Russia and the U.S. held a phone call, during which they agreed to meet in Budapest in the coming days.
