Some Louvre jewelry moved to Bank of France for safekeeping
Some of the Louvre’s jewelry, including pieces from the Apollo Gallery, have been transferred to the Bank of France for safekeeping, RTL reports, citing sources. The exhibits were moved to bank vaults located 300 meters from the museum under tight security.
It is unclear exactly which valuable items were moved. Both the Louvre and the Bank of France have declined to comment.
RTL reports that the Louvre items are now stored in an underground vault 26 meters deep, where roughly 90% of the republic’s gold reserves are kept.
On Oct. 19, four thieves broke into the Louvre in Paris and stole nine pieces from the imperial collection, including jewelry that belonged to Emperor Napoleon and his wife Josephine, which had been kept in the Apollo Gallery. The stolen items are valued at €88 million. The crime has not yet been solved.
