5 more arrested in Louvre heist case

French police have arrested five more suspects in connection with the Louvre heist case, the BBC reports, citing Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau.

This brings the total number of arrests in the high-profile case to seven. The stolen jewelry has not yet been recovered.

Speaking to RTL radio, the prosecutor said that one of the detainees was identified through DNA traces found at the crime scene. AFP referred to him as the main suspect.

“We had been tracking him,” Beccuau said.

“As for the other individuals in custody, they are people who may be able to provide us with information about what happened,” she added.

According to the prosecutor, it is still too early to share further details about the suspects.

The five individuals were detained in Paris and nearby suburbs, particularly in the Seine-Saint-Denis department, where one suspect was arrested on Saturday (another was detained at Charles de Gaulle Airport shortly before boarding a plane).

The Louvre heist took place on Oct. 19, during which four individuals stole historical treasures worth €88 million from the world’s most visited museum.
