
Mexican mayor known for anti-drug efforts assassinated
Carlos Manzo, Municipal President of Mexico’s Uruapan, was assassinated during a public celebration, El País reports.
Unidentified assailants opened fire on the official’s motorcade, killing him at the scene. A city council member and the mayor’s bodyguard were also wounded in the attack.
According to official reports, one of the attackers was killed, and two others have been arrested.
Manzo was known as an outspoken opponent of drug cartels and had repeatedly appealed to Mexico’s federal government for help in restoring order in the city.
