Sarkozy may be released from prison

The French prosecutor’s office has proposed that Sarkozy — who was sentenced to five years in prison for illegally financing his election campaign — be released from prison and placed under judicial supervision, BFMTV reports.

According to the statement, prosecutors suggested freeing him on the condition that he be prohibited from contacting other individuals involved in the case.

Sarkozy is attending the court hearing via video link. If the court decides to change his detention measure, he may be released immediately. The court’s decision is expected at 4:30 p.m. Yerevan time.

The 70-year-old Sarkozy, who served as president from 2007 to 2012, was found guilty on Sept. 25 in the case against him and began serving his sentence on Oct. 21 in a solitary cell at Paris’s Santé Prison.
