Court rules Sarkozy to be released from prison
Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy will be released from prison but will remain under supervision. The Paris Court of Appeal ruled that Sarkozy’s pre-trial detention was unjustified, LCI reports.
Earlier, it was reported that the French prosecutor’s office had proposed releasing Sarkozy — who was sentenced to five years in prison for illegal campaign financing — from prison.
As noted, prosecutors suggested freeing him on the condition that he be prohibited from contacting other individuals involved in the case.
The 70-year-old Sarkozy, who served as president from 2007 to 2012, was found guilty on Sept. 25 and began serving his sentence on Oct. 21 in a solitary cell at Paris’s Santé Prison.
