Experts says wheat imported via Azerbaijan has low nutritional value
The issue of the quality of wheat imported to Armenia from Kazakhstan through Azerbaijan remains under discussion, particularly regarding the advisability of using grade four wheat.
In an interview with ABC Media, Anush Poghosyan, head of the Right to Health human rights NGO, said that fourth-grade wheat is considered the lowest quality grain in terms of nutritional value.
“If the wheat is clean and free of mold or mycotoxins, its main issue is simply low nutritional value. It contains less protein and gluten, which makes it less nutritious,” Poghosyan explained.
She added that wheat becomes dangerous when it is not properly inspected and contains mold or fungal elements.
“If the wheat is not clean, mold can lead to the growth of fungi that may damage the liver, weaken the immune system, and negatively affect digestion. In some cases, wheat consumption can also cause allergic reactions,” she warned.
According to Poghosyan, it is essential not only to assess the wheat’s nutritional content but also to ensure strict safety monitoring.
“If testing confirms that fourth-grade wheat is clean and poses no health risks, it can be used when mixed with higher-grade wheat,” she noted.
