Pope Leo XIV says Palestinian state’s creation is only solution to decades-long conflict
Pope Leo said on Sunday that the only solution in the decades-long conflict between Israel and Palestine must include a Palestinian state, Reuters writes.
The Pope made the comments while traveling to Beirut — Lebanon is the second leg of his first overseas trip, following Turkey. Speaking to journalists aboard the plane, the leader of the Catholic Church reaffirmed the Vatican’s position, emphasizing the need for a “two-state” solution for Israel and Palestine.
“We all know that at this time Israel still does not accept that solution, but we see it as the only solution,” the pontiff said. “We are also friends with Israel and we are seeking to be a mediating voice between the two parties that might help them close in on a solution with justice for everyone.”
Addressing the region’s economic uncertainty, political divisions and rising tensions — including the ongoing war with Israel — the pope urged Lebanese leaders to set aside their disagreements for the sake of peace, stressing that peace must be seen not merely as an aspiration but as a necessity.
Lebanon has the largest Christian community in the Middle East. Pope Leo XIV’s visit fulfills a promise made by his predecessor, Pope Francis, who had long wished to travel to Lebanon but was unable to do so due to his deteriorating health.
The first stop on the pope’s trip was Turkey, where he visited Ankara, Iznik, and Istanbul.
