Trump says it’s time for Americans to stop calling football ‘soccer’

US President Donald Trump has said it is time for Americans to stop calling the sport of football “soccer” and start using the word “football” like other countries around the world, Euronews reports.

Trump made the statement after receiving the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize prior to the 2026 World Cup draw last week.

According to the U.S. president, the sport Americans call “soccer” should actually be called “football,” because players mostly use their feet — unlike American football.

He jokes that the U.S. should find a new name for American football, because it doesn’t really make sense that a sport mostly played with hands is called “football.”
