US withdraws from WHO, leaving around $260M unpaid

The United States has officially withdrawn from the World Health Organization (WHO), reportedly leaving an unpaid bill of approximately $260 million, Bloomberg writes.

The publication states that the World Health Assembly plans to discuss legal options for resolving this issue in May.

On Jan. 20, 2025, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to withdraw the country from the WHO. Trump accused the organization of demanding “unfairly heavy” contributions from the United States.

Bloomberg reports that Washington has halted funding, stopped participating in relevant working groups, and recalled its representatives from the organization.
