Inside Nicolás Maduro’s prison conditions in US

Kidnapped President of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro is being held in a solitary confinement cell measuring about 3 meters by 2 meters in a prison in Brooklyn, TASS reports, citing the Spanish newspaper ABC.

According to the report, such cells are officially used for several purposes, including disciplinary isolation, suicide prevention, and the protection of particularly dangerous or high-risk detainees.

“The cell is a narrow space — about three meters long and two meters wide — with a metal bed, a toilet, a sink and a narrow window that lets in very little natural light,” the newspaper said.

Detainees are allowed to leave the cell three times a week for one hour, always in handcuffs and accompanied by two guards. During this time, they may take a shower, use the phone, check email under supervision, or go out into a small fenced yard.

On Jan. 3, the United States carried out strikes on civilian and military targets in Venezuela, kidnapping Nicolás Maduro and his wife. On Jan. 5, they appeared before the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. They are accused of drug trafficking, although the couple has pleaded not guilty.

Delcy Rodríguez, who served as vice president during Maduro’s presidency, is currently acting as the country’s interim president.
