Archaeological remains of 19th-century Meghretsots church of Shushi turn into dump
Construction works in Shushi have damaged the archaeological
remains of Meghretsots Holy Mother of God Church. A satellite photo, taken on
Nov. 3, shows that Azerbaijan dumped —
likely using heavy machinery — all the construction waste from the surrounding
areas on the church’s foundation walls, uncovered by excavations in 2017,
monumentwatch.org writes.
As early as 2021, satellite photos showed that the church
was becoming neglected, and its walls were getting covered with grass.
Meghretsots Holy Mother of God Church was built in 1838 with the financial
support of Mahtesi Hakhumyants.
