5.3 earthquake occurs near Tokyo

An earthquake, measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale, occurred in Ibaraki Prefecture, near Tokyo. The severest tremors were also felt in the neighboring prefectures, in Tochigi and Saitama, the Japan Meteorological Agency reports.

It is noted that the tremors were registered at 9:08 a.m. local time (4:08 a.m. Yerevan time). The epicenter was located at a depth of 50 kilometers.

There have been no reports on casualties or damages; tsunami warnings have not been issued. There have been no reports of disruptions in the operation of the nuclear power plants located in the region.

Before the tremors, the residents of Tokyo had been warned about a possible huge earthquake.
