European Parliament members call on European Commission president and US secretary of state to ensure Armenia’s security

Twenty-four MPs from different factions of the European Parliament called on President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to ensure the security of Armenia.

“As the European Union and the United States express their support for Yerevan, we, 24 EU MPs, ask Ursula von der Leyen and Antony Blinken to ensure the security of Armenia, facing threats from Azerbaijan,” Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament Nathalie Loiseau said in an X post.

“We welcome the tripartite meeting held in Brussels on April 5, which initiated the real engagement of the European Union and the United States in providing support to Armenia, its democracy, security and territorial integrity,” the MPs said in a letter.

The letter states that the international community passively followed the Karabakh war in 2020, Azerbaijan’s cruelty against Karabakh and Azerbaijan’s actual occupation of a part of Armenia’s territory.

“Azerbaijan does not stop using militant rhetoric against Armenia, accusing it of provocations. At the same time, Russia is looking for an excuse to punish Armenia for changing its orientation toward Europe. We cannot remain indifferent to the threats to democracy, and we are sure that Armenia is not looking for anything other than living in peace with its neighbors and choosing its own path,” reads the letter.

The MPs called on von der Leyen and Blinken to make a simple gesture: to go to Armenia and assure the Armenian people that they are not alone in their struggle for survival and freedom.
