Russia’s relations with Armenia and Azerbaijan also touched upon while discussing Lavrov’s candidacy for foreign minister

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the Russian Federation Council has finished consultations on Sergey Lavrov’s candidacy for the post of Russian foreign minister, TASS reports. According to Grigory Karasin, the head of the committee, the consultations were very lively, and the questions of the senators referred to “the widest scope of the international activities of the Russian Federation”. “First, our relations with the neighboring countries, the Caucasus states, i.e., Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, were discussed. A reference was made to the so-called Eurasian security, which is now being formed quite quickly and should replace the ineffective Euro-Atlantic security, which is now becoming irrelevant for us because it is completely subordinated to the interests of the U.S., the U.K., the EU and NATO,” Karasin said.
