Who is Russia’s new defense minister?

Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed Andrey Belousov’s candidacy for the post of Russian defense minister.

In the previous administration, Belousov served as the first deputy prime minister.

Previously, Belousov, 65, served as Vladimir Putin’s presidential assistant in Economic Affairs, minister of Economic Development of Russia, and director of the Department of Economics and Finance in the Russian Prime Minister’s Office. Earlier, in 1981–2006, he worked at the Russian Academy of Sciences.

From April 30 to May 19, 2020, when incumbent Prime Minister Mishustin was hospitalized with COVID-19, Belousov temporarily held the position of head of the Cabinet.
