The status of a country waiting forever lies in store for Armenia: Experts on Yerevan’s chances of EU integration

In a conversation with NEWS.ru, Russian State Duma Deputy Aleksey Govyrin expressed doubt that Armenia will be “accepted” into the European Union. The deputy is sure that membership in the EU will not affect the country’s economy in any way.

According to him, Russia can directly or covertly impose sanctions on Armenia. “Armenia will not be admitted into the EU. But as far as this topic is concerned, membership in the EU means nothing in itself,” Govyrin said, adding that Armenia cannot offer anything special to the European Union. According to him, EU representatives will simply “instruct Yerevan what needs to be reviewed, changed and reformed so that one day it will achieve the coveted status”.

According to the deputy, it is almost impossible to fully carry out those instructions. “At best, the status of a country waiting forever lies in store for Armenia,” Govyrin concluded.

In a conversation with Lenta.ru, political scientist Konstantin Blokhin also assessed the chances of Yerevan’s integration into the EU as slim. According to him, Pashinyan’s statement itself shows that Armenia is moving toward the West. Moreover, the tension between Russia and Armenia is growing, and they are facing a crisis in their relations. “In order to integrate into the EU, Armenia’s economy must be raised to a European level and meet certain standards. Most likely, the West will promise something, but Armenia will not join the EU,” Blokhin said.
